Memory Wars
Description
Memory Wars takes the card-matching game everyone knows and adds the one thing it never had: a cost. Turning a card spends energy. Matching a pair damages the enemy in front of you. Running out of energy before the enemy runs out of health ends the stage.
That single change turns a memory game into a resource game. Flipping a card at random to see what is there is no longer free, so the correct play is often to turn a card you already half-remember rather than explore a new one. Guessing badly costs twice: the energy, and the turn.
Enemies vary in what they do to the board rather than only in how much health they have. Some shuffle, some hide, some punish a failed pair harder than the energy already does. Working out what each one is doing is as important as remembering where the cards are.
Card effects sit on top as the tactical layer, and holding one for the right pair is worth more than using it early. It is a short game that asks for concentration rather than reflexes, which makes it unusual company for the rest of the genre.
