Description

Spider Solitaire deals two decks into ten columns and asks for something simple to say and hard to do: build runs from king down to ace in a single suit, and a completed run leaves the table. Clear eight of them and the game is over.

The suit count is the whole difficulty setting. With one suit every card can sit on every card and the game is a pleasant untangling. With two it starts to bite. With four, a run you carefully built can be split by a single forced deal, and the layout cannot be undone, only worked around.

The stock is the pressure. Dealing a new row covers everything, and it is only legal when no column is empty, so the game punishes hoarding empty space almost as much as it punishes never making any. Most losses trace back to a deal taken one move too early.

An undo button is there, and using it is part of how people actually play this. Treated as a puzzle to be worked at rather than a hand to be won or lost, four-suit Spider has earned its place as one of the longest-lived card games on any computer.
