Description

Snakes and Ladders : the game is the board game as it is: one hundred squares, one die, and no decisions to make. Roll, move, and take whatever the square you land on gives you.

The game comes from ancient India, where it was called Moksha Patam and the board was a moral diagram — ladders for good conduct, snakes for the opposite. The symbolism traveled less well than the structure, which is why the game is still played everywhere.

What keeps it tense is the size of the swings. A ladder near the bottom can carry you most of the way up the board, and a long snake near the top can undo an entire game in one roll. Neither is something you can play around, which is the point.

Finishing requires an exact roll onto 100. Overshoot and the token bounces back by the difference, so the last few squares regularly take longer than the first ninety.
