Guivo.io takes match-three, the most solitary genre there is, and puts a real person on the other side of it. You each get a board, you both get two minutes, and the higher score takes the round.

Ice is what keeps the two boards from being separate games. It spreads as the round goes on, locking pieces where they sit. Frozen pieces still count towards a match, so the board never becomes unplayable, but it does become slower, and a player who ignores the ice early spends the last thirty seconds fighting their own board.

Clearing ice pays a bonus, which sets up the only real strategic tension in the game: chase the high-value matches now, or spend moves breaking ice to keep the board fast later. Two minutes is short enough that the choice cannot be deferred.

Ranking uses an Elo system taken from chess rather than a win streak, so it settles at your actual level rather than rewarding whoever plays most. Winners take trophies and a spot on the banner, which is a small thing that turns out to matter.
