Description

The Best Warrior begins with a peasant, a wooden dummy and an ambition that nobody in the kingdom takes seriously. Attack power comes from hitting the dummy, gold comes from beating whatever is willing to fight you, and the two feed each other from there.

Progression is the whole point rather than a side effect. Every session moves a number, and the numbers are visible enough that you can see exactly which one is holding you back. That is the honest version of what a role-playing game does, with the story stripped out.

Bosses are the walls between stages, and they are tuned so that grinding a little more is always an option and rarely the fastest one. Learning a boss usually beats out-levelling it, which keeps the training from becoming the only thing you do.

Skins are unlocked rather than bought and they raise how quickly you grow, so the cosmetic layer feeds back into the progression. It is a small, tidy loop with the pixel art to match, and it is easy to lose an hour to.
