Belote 3in1
Description
Belote is to France roughly what rummy is to Indonesia: the card game people actually play. Four players in two teams, a thirty-two card deck, and tricks won by following suit or trumping. Belote 3in1 includes it along with its two more demanding descendants.
The base game is about counting. Aces and tens carry most of the value rather than the face cards, which means a trick that looks small can be worth more than one that looks impressive. Remembering what has gone is the difference between a competent player and a good one.
Contrée adds bidding, so you declare what your side intends to score before a card is played. Coinche pushes further with declarations, no-trump and all-trump modes, and the option to double an opponent’s bid. Each layer makes the same hand of cards a different problem.
The computer players follow the rules properly, which matters in a partnership game where a partner who forgets the trump suit ruins the hand. If you have never played Belote, start with the original; the other two assume you already know what a trick is worth.
