The cards start face down and you turn two at a time. If they match they stay open; if they do not, they flip back and the only thing you keep is the knowledge of what was there. That is the entire game, and it has not needed changing in a very long time.

The skill is in what you do with a failed pair. A beginner turns two cards at random and hopes; a better player turns one card they already know and one they do not, which converts a guess into a test. Doing that consistently is the difference between clearing a board quickly and grinding through it.

The magical theme is in the art rather than the rules — colourful cards and animations that play when a pair comes together. That suits the game, since anything that changed the mechanics would only get in the way of the one thing it asks you to do.

It works for a young child and an adult for the same reason: the rules take five seconds to explain and the difficulty comes entirely from how much you can hold in your head. Nothing is timed, so there is no penalty for taking a moment to think before turning the second card.
