Chess Online is built around eighteen difficulty levels running from Beginner to World Champion, which is the feature that matters most for a game like this. An engine that always wins teaches nothing; one that wins by a little teaches a great deal.

The support tools are unusually complete for a browser chess game. Legal moves are highlighted, a hint will show you the best move if you ask, and a move can be taken back if you played it before you looked. Purists can turn all of that off; everybody else improves faster with it on.

The analysis afterwards is the part worth staying for. It walks back through the game, marks where the position turned, and explains what should have been played instead. Losing a game and understanding why is more useful than winning one and not.

Time controls run from unlimited through rapid, blitz and bullet, and a handicap setting lets a stronger player give material away rather than pretending to be worse. It is a complete chess client in a browser tab.
