Description

Horseback Survival opens with a man waking from a coma into a world that has ended without him. The only thing still recognisable is Badal, the horse he was born on the same day as, and the game is built around what the two of them can do together.

Movement is the horse and combat is you. Mounted you are fast and hard to catch; on foot you can aim properly and reach what a horse cannot. Deciding which to be, at which moment, is the tactical layer, and staying mounted through a fight you should have dismounted for is the usual mistake.

Fighting has three registers: melee for anything that reached you, ranged for anything that has not, and stealth for the groups where neither is worth the noise. Sneaking past is always allowed and often better, which is unusual for a game that hands you a bow.

The story is told lightly and stays out of the way, and the bond between rider and horse is stated once rather than laboured. It is a survival game with a smaller and more personal frame than most.
