Description

Mate in Chess is not chess. There is no opponent thinking against you and no clock. There is a position, a king that needs trapping, and a small number of moves in which to do it.

That removes almost everything people find intimidating about chess and keeps the part that is actually satisfying. You do not need an opening repertoire or endgame theory. You need to look at six pieces and see the one arrangement in which the king has nowhere to go.

The puzzles start with pieces moving in obvious ways and build towards combinations, where the first move looks pointless until you see what it takes away from the king. Learning to look for a move that removes an escape square rather than one that attacks is the shift the game is teaching.

Because the rules are only the movement rules, it works as a way into chess for someone who has never played a full game. It also works for someone who has, because a well-built mate puzzle is satisfying at any level.
