Description

FreeCell is the solitaire variant that removed luck. Every card is face up from the start, there is no stock to draw from, and of the original set of deals only one is known to be impossible. A loss here is a mistake rather than a bad shuffle, which is either the appeal or the problem depending on the day.

The four cells at the top left are the whole game. Each holds one card, and how many you leave free decides how large a run you can move at once. Filling all four to solve a local problem is the classic way to lose: the board looks better and every move after it has become impossible.

The tableau builds down in alternating colours, the foundations build up by suit, and empty columns are worth more than they look. An empty column works like an extra free cell, so digging one out early is usually stronger than sending cards to the foundations as soon as they are available.

Because the deal is fully visible, the game rewards looking before touching. Aces buried under long descending runs, a column of five that can never be unstacked, a colour piled too heavily on one side, all of it is readable in the first thirty seconds if you take them.
