Scala 40
Description
Scala 40 is played with two French decks and their jokers, which means duplicates are common and a card you need may well turn up twice. On each turn you draw one card and discard one, slowly shaping a hand into sets of matching values and runs of consecutive cards in the same suit.
The rule that gives the game its name is the opening threshold. Nothing you build leaves your hand until the combinations you put down are worth at least forty points together, so a promising set often has to sit there while you look for something to pair it with. Every turn spent waiting is a turn your opponents may be finishing.
Once you have opened, the game changes character completely. You can attach loose cards to your own combinations and to those already on the table in front of the other players, which turns a hand of leftovers into a way of emptying out fast. Cards that were dead weight a moment ago become your quickest exit.
The round ends when one player runs out of cards. Everyone else counts up what they are still holding, and that total goes against them, so being caught mid-build with a heavy hand hurts far more than never opening at all. Playing safe and playing to win pull in opposite directions here.
