The Roman Empire Colosseum belongs to the battle-simulator genre, where the whole game happens before the fighting starts. You spend a budget on units, arrange them on your side of the arena, press start, and then you are a spectator.

That makes composition the entire skill. Warriors hold a line, riders break one, mages hit what the line cannot reach, and titans absorb what everything else cannot survive. Spending everything on one type produces a beautiful army that loses to a mixed one.

Position matters as much as purchase. The same units arranged in a wide line and in a deep column behave completely differently, because the physics decide who reaches whom and in what order. Two identical armies can produce opposite results from placement alone.

Levels escalate by giving the other side something your current answer does not cover, so a formation that cleared five in a row will suddenly fail. Watching a fight you set up go wrong is more informative than winning, which is the appeal of the genre.
