Description

Empire Island is a longer, slower strategy game than its cartoon surface suggests. You start with a rock, a small population and wooden boats appearing on the horizon, and you finish, several hours later, firing lasers at alien landing craft.

Growth and defence pull against each other the whole way. Houses raise your population, population raises taxes, taxes buy the weapons that protect the houses. Build too much of either and the other collapses, and the game does not warn you before it happens.

There are around thirty construction types, from mud-ball throwers to cannons, mines, explosive balloons and tesla coils, and the projectiles obey physics rather than snapping to targets. Aim matters, elevation matters, and a weapon that is perfect for one approach is useless against another.

Acts of God sit above all of it: lightning, tsunamis and firestorms you can call down when the line is about to break. They are limited enough to be an emergency measure rather than a plan. The developer’s own warning is fair, this is not a ten-minute game, and a first run through takes about an hour.
