Description

Lunar Phase Battle is played on a grid with cards showing phases of the moon. You place a card on an empty tile, and connecting phases in the right relationship claims tiles for you. Every claimed tile adds to your score, and the board fills as both players work.

What makes it a proper strategy game is that capture goes both ways. Forming a pair or a cycle takes tiles from your opponent exactly as it takes them for you, so a strong placement is one that scores now and is awkward to answer, not simply one that scores the most.

Because tiles can be taken back, an early lead means very little on its own. The tile you claimed in the middle of the board is the most exposed thing you own, and the players who win are usually the ones who built outward from an edge they could actually hold.

Turns are short and the rules fit in a sentence, which makes this easy to start and surprisingly hard to stop. It sits closer to a board game you would play across a table than to anything requiring reflexes, and it rewards thinking one exchange further ahead than your opponent did.
