Description
You start in one corner and your rival starts in the opposite one. Each turn you pick a colour, and every tile of that colour touching your territory joins it. The board fills as the two of you grow, and whoever holds the larger area when it is full wins.
The restriction is what makes it a game rather than a colouring exercise. The colour you are currently holding is unavailable, and so is the one your rival is holding, so on every turn two of the choices are already removed and you are picking from what is left.
Because absorbed tiles have to be connected, a colour that adds only three cells now can put you up against a large block of a different colour for next turn. Playing for the immediate gain is the beginner move; playing for the border you will have afterwards is what the game is asking for.
The rival expands on the same board under the same rules, so blocking is as available as growing. Taking a colour partly because it denies it to them is often better arithmetic than taking the biggest patch, and progress saves on its own between rounds.
