We Are In A Simulation Simulator has one rule and takes it seriously: copy everybody else. The crowd walks, you walk. The crowd crouches, you crouch. Anything you do on your own initiative marks you out, and being marked out ends the level.

Which makes it a game about watching rather than acting. The signal is always in the crowd and always slightly ahead of you, so the players who do well are the ones who move a fraction late and correctly rather than early and wrong.

The joke works because the instinct to explore is so strong. Every open door and every unusual corner is exactly the sort of thing a game normally rewards, and here it is the fastest way to be eliminated. Unlearning that takes a few attempts.

Scenarios change what conformity looks like, so a habit built in one is a liability in the next. It is short, dry and quietly funny, and it does something almost nothing else on this site does.
