A ball bounces around a screen full of coloured bricks and a paddle at the bottom is all that keeps it in play. Break every brick to move on; let the ball past you and the attempt is over. The rules have not needed changing since the arcade original.

Where the ball meets the paddle is the whole control. A hit near the centre sends it back roughly the way it came; a hit near either edge sends it away at a sharp angle. That is how you reach the bricks tucked into a corner, and it is also how a careless return puts the ball somewhere you cannot follow.

Power-ups fall from broken bricks and change the paddle rather than the ball. Catching one means moving to where it lands, which is not always where the ball needs you to be — so taking a power-up is a small risk, and taking every one of them is how a comfortable level goes wrong.

The mouse, the arrow keys and a finger all steer the paddle, and the mouse is the most precise of the three. Levels are short and restart at once, which suits a game where the difference between clearing a board and losing it is often one return.
