Description

ChessField keeps the rules intact. Rooks travel in straight lines, bishops on the diagonals, knights in their awkward jump, and everything you already know about how the pieces relate to each other still holds. What changes is the presentation around them.

Dressing the board as an arena has a real effect on how the game feels rather than how it plays. A capture reads as something happening rather than a piece being lifted off, and for players who bounce off the formality of a traditional set, that difference is the reason they finish a game.

Underneath, the thinking is the same as it always was. Control the middle, do not move the same piece twice in the opening for no reason, and count what you are trading before you trade it. The arena does not forgive a hanging queen any more gently than a wooden board would.

It suits short sessions and players who are still learning as much as it suits anyone confident. Nothing is hidden and nothing is randomised, so a loss is always something you can go back and understand, which is the whole reason chess has lasted.
