Fireside Solitaire
Description
Fireside Solitaire looks like a game with nowhere to be. There is a fire, soft light and quiet music, and the cards are laid out in columns waiting to be cleared. Play a card that is one rank higher or lower than the open card, and it goes.
The rule that gives it teeth is the draw pile. It cannot be reshuffled, so every card you turn is spent permanently, and running out ends the game whether or not the table is nearly clear. That single restriction turns a relaxing layout into something you have to think about.
Chains are how you stay alive. Clearing several cards in a row costs you nothing from the pile, while playing one card and drawing again burns the resource you cannot replace. Looking for the longest run available, rather than the most obvious card, is the habit the game is teaching.
The atmosphere is not decoration either. Because the pressure is quiet rather than timed, this works as a game to sit with in the evening, and losing feels like a puzzle you could have solved rather than a reflex you failed.
