Description

Backgammon has been played, under one name or another, for roughly five thousand years. Greeks call it tavli, Egyptians tawla, Iranians takhteh. The board is the same everywhere: twenty-four points across four quadrants, and one goal, to walk all fifteen of your checkers around to your home board and bear them off before your opponent does.

Two dice decide how far you may move each turn, but they do not decide the game. A checker standing alone on a point is a blot, and an opposing checker landing there sends it back to the start. Stacking two or more on a point makes it safe and, more importantly, denies it to the other side. Six safe points in a row is a prime, and a prime is very hard to escape.

That is what turns a dice game into a strategy game. Racing ahead when you are in front, holding a back point and waiting for a hit when you are behind, choosing between a safe play and a bold one, all of it is judgement rather than luck. Luck decides individual rolls; it does not decide a long session.

Backgammon Duel keeps the presentation plain and the rules intact, so anyone who learned the game on a wooden board will recognise everything on screen. If you are new to it, the rules are short enough to pick up in a game or two.
