Description

Mancala is played across Africa and Asia under dozens of names, and Indonesia knows it as congklak. Twelve small pits, six on each side, a larger store at each end, and stones that travel anticlockwise around the board one pit at a time.

The rules take a minute to learn and considerably longer to see through. A move is simply picking up a pit and sowing its stones, but where the last stone lands decides whether you go again, capture, or hand the turn over having improved your opponent’s position for them.

Counting ahead is the entire game. Every pit is a number and every move is arithmetic, and a strong player is looking three sowings deep at where a stone will finish rather than at how many they are moving now.

Played against another person on the same device, it is exactly the game people play on a wooden board. Played alone it is a quiet exercise in counting, and either way it has lasted this long for a reason.
