Musketeers Gunpowder vs Steel
Description
Musketeers puts you in command of a mercenary company at the moment when firearms had arrived but had not yet won. A musket hits hard and then leaves its owner defenceless for a long half-minute, which is exactly why pikemen still stood beside them.
You play as the commander on the field rather than a cursor above it. Orders go to the squad as a body: turn left, turn right, advance, halt, follow me, fire. Getting a volley off means having the squad facing the right way before the enemy closes, and a squad caught reloading with no pikes in front of it rarely recovers.
Reiters, pistol-armed cavalry, add a third piece. They can break a formation that has just fired, and can be broken in turn by one that has not. Most of the tactical interest sits in that timing rather than in unit statistics.
Between battles you train and reinforce the company, which makes losses matter more than in a game that resets each level. It rewards patience with the controls: the orders are simple individually, and awkward only until the squad starts moving the way you meant.
