Races take place on street circuits against other players rather than a field of bots. That changes the rhythm of a lap: the car ahead is being driven by someone who also brakes late and also wants the inside line, so overtakes have to be set up rather than simply attempted.

Drifting is held on the space bar, and it is the only way to carry speed through a tight corner. Entering the slide too early scrubs off the speed you were saving; entering it too late puts the nose into the wall. The corners assume you will use it, so avoiding the drift entirely is not a slower-but-safer option.

Nitro on Shift is a separate resource and works best on the exit of a corner rather than the entry. Firing it while the car is still sideways wastes most of the boost, and that is the mistake which keeps a fast driver in second place. Drift first, straighten, then boost.

One-on-one duels strip the race down to two cars, and there is nowhere to hide in that format. Customising the car is part of the loop between races, and the one you settle on matters more in a duel than in a full field, where somebody else making a mistake can still hand you a place.
