Description

Tic Tac Toe Merge keeps the three-by-three grid and changes what a piece is. Every piece has a level from one to three, and a higher-level piece placed on a lower one takes the square. Suddenly a filled board is not a finished board.

You hold three pieces at a time, and you can merge them in hand before you play them. Two level ones make a level two, two level twos make a level three, and every merge costs you a piece you could have placed. Playing wide with weak pieces or narrow with strong ones is the first real decision of every match.

Lines still score, but they score by level and by size, so three level threes are worth far more than three level ones. Better still, aligning several pieces of the same level merges them into something stronger, which means a scoring line can leave you holding a bigger threat than the one you just spent.

It is short enough to play in a minute and deep enough to keep beating you for a while after you think you have it. The best moves are frequently the ones that do nothing this turn.
