Description

Canasta is played with two full decks and four jokers, so there are a hundred and eight cards in circulation and every rank appears eight times. That size is the reason the game feels different from smaller card games — a card you discard now can easily come back.

Jokers and twos are wild, and how you spend them is most of the skill. A wild card completes a meld today or waits for a meld worth more later, and holding one too long is as much a mistake as spending it too early.

The target is a canasta: seven cards of the same rank in one meld. Building toward it means committing to a rank early and hoping the discard pile cooperates, so the decision of what to keep is made long before it pays off.

You can play with two or four at the table and set the turn order in either direction. The game saves itself after every turn, which suits a card game whose hands take longer than a phone call usually allows.
