Goal.io keeps one thing from football — putting the ball in the net — and throws away everything else. There is no passing structure, no positions and nobody blowing a whistle. You move a blocky character around a small pitch and shove the ball goalwards by whatever means present themselves.

The walls change the game more than anything. A shot that would be a wasted possession on a real pitch comes back off the side and arrives somewhere nobody was covering, so angles that look absurd are often the ones worth taking.

Matches are short and there is no build-up phase to sit through, which suits the arcade physics. Both players are moving constantly, possession changes every few seconds, and a goal is as likely to come from a scramble as from anything you planned.

Power-ups appear during play and shift the balance without deciding it. Picking one up is worth a detour, but chasing a power-up while your opponent has the ball is the classic way to concede. The whole thing is built to be picked up in a few seconds and played in short bursts.
