Mecha Duel
Description
Each duel puts your machine opposite one other robot in an arena with nothing else in it. There is no cover to use and no third party to distract the enemy, so a fight is settled entirely by what the two machines can do to each other.
The controls are deliberately thin: you click where the game tells you and the robot carries out the action. That puts the emphasis on timing and on reading the opponent rather than on how quickly you can work a keyboard, and it keeps the game equally playable on a touchscreen.
Surviving is not assumed. Later opponents hit harder than the machine you start with can absorb, and there is no way to win those fights by playing more carefully. Upgrades to your robot are the mechanism that closes the gap, and they come out of the duels you have already won.
That makes the progression the actual structure of the game. A duel you lose is not wasted, since it shows what the next opponent is capable of, and the upgrade you buy afterwards is chosen with that in mind. The 3D arena keeps both machines in frame throughout, so nothing important happens off screen.
