Monster Dash
Description
Monster Dash comes from Halfbrick, the studio behind Jetpack Joyride and Fruit Ninja, and it shares their habit of building an entire game out of two buttons. You run automatically. You jump, and you shoot, and that is the whole vocabulary.
Barry Steakfries runs through a series of monster-infested worlds that keep handing him better weapons, and the weapons change the rhythm rather than just the damage. A shotgun clears what is in front of you and stops you dead for a moment; a machine gun keeps you moving. Choosing when to fire is really choosing when to slow down.
The levels are built from segments that recombine, so the game is never memorised but is always readable. You learn the pieces rather than the order, which is why a long run feels earned rather than lucky.
It comes from the era when mobile developers made things that respected your thumbs, and it has aged well. Two buttons, escalating chaos, and a run that always ends one jump before you expected it to.
