Running Late
Description
You are late for work again and the boss wants the story. Three cards a day build the excuse, and the cards are absurd on purpose — a traffic jam, a negotiation with pigeons, a dog showing no remorse. The absurdity is not the difficulty; the bookkeeping is.
Each card commits you to something. Play a card that puts you on the bus and you have said you were on the bus, so a later card blaming a flat tyre contradicts it. The red CONTRADICTION stamp comes down and your credibility takes the hit, and nothing about the card being funny protects you from that.
The boss asks follow-up questions and you answer by tapping, which is where a story either holds or unravels. A chain built out of vague cards survives questioning better than a vivid one, but vague cards are also the ones that make a weak excuse. Choosing between the two is the actual game.
You can redraw your hand or, once per run, simply tell the truth. The truth option is there as a real choice rather than a joke, and taking it is sometimes the better outcome — a surprisingly pointed thing for a game about lying to your boss to include.
