Authentic Football is a proper match rather than a minigame. The pitch is modelled in full, with goalposts and stands, the players move at a believable pace, and the ball follows the physics you would expect rather than an arcade curve.

Passing is split across two keys, and that split is the game. A short pass keeps possession and moves you a few metres; a long pass changes the shape of the attack and gives the defence time to reorganise. Choosing between them under pressure is what separates a move that ends in a shot from one that ends in a turnover.

Shooting is a third key, and the ball behaving realistically means power alone does not score. A shot struck from a bad angle behaves exactly as badly as it should, so working the ball into a position first matters more than in games where any shot might go in.

Player switching lets you take whoever is best placed, which is essential once you are defending. Holding one player and chasing the ball with him is the mistake most people make first, and the game punishes it about as firmly as real football does.
