Description

Vortex 9 is a multiplayer shooter that plays it straight underneath a very silly surface. The characters are cat-people and talking robots, the weapon list includes a battle lollipop, and the shooting itself is as tight as anything wearing camouflage.

That combination is the appeal. Aim, positioning and map knowledge all decide fights the way they would in a serious shooter, but losing one to a robot holding a giant sweet lands very differently than losing it to yet another soldier.

The arsenal runs from ordinary rifles and shotguns to the joke weapons, and the joke weapons are genuinely usable rather than novelties bolted on. Picking one up mid-match and finding out how it behaves is part of the fun of a round.

Matches are quick and fill quickly, so you are shooting within a minute of loading the page. Controls are standard shooter layout — move, jump, crouch, aim, throw, swap — which means anyone who has played one before will not need the tutorial.
