Number Merge Master adds something number-merge games rarely have, which is a health bar. A wrong move does not merely waste a turn, it takes health, so playing carelessly stops being free.

Because mistakes carry a price, the pace of the game shifts. A board that keeps filling still pushes you to move quickly, but every bit of that speed has to be paid for with accuracy, and the two pull against each other throughout a run.

A good merge restores your position and raises the score at once, so a single strong move can pay for several weak ones. Finding one of those when the board is already crowded is the skill the game is really testing.

Runs are short and immediately repeatable, so failing costs almost nothing. What brings people back is usually not the score but one particular board they now know how to read.
