Math Crossword Puzzle
Description
Math Crossword takes the shape of a word crossword and replaces the letters with digits. Each row and column is an unfinished equation, you have a pool of numbers, and every number has exactly one place it can go.
What makes it a puzzle rather than a worksheet is that the rows and columns share squares. A number that satisfies the addition running across also has to satisfy the multiplication running down. The easiest placement is often the wrong one, and the correct opening is usually the square with the fewest possibilities rather than the simplest sum.
All four operations appear, and the later grids mix them within a single line. That is where the difficulty actually lives. Knowing that six times four is twenty-four is not the hard part; working out which of three candidate numbers is the only one that keeps two intersecting lines true is.
It suits a wide range of ages for the same reason a crossword does: the mechanics are learned in one level and the difficulty comes entirely from the grid in front of you. Nothing is timed, and a wrong placement can simply be picked up again.
