Description

The rules of a word search have not changed in a century: a grid of letters, a list of words, and the words hidden in it running in any of eight directions. This one fills the list with animals and runs it across forty-five levels grouped by class.

Backwards words are what make it a puzzle rather than a scan. The eye finds a word reading left to right almost automatically. Finding the same word running right to left, or diagonally upwards, takes a deliberate second pass, and the later levels rely on that.

Grouping the levels by animal class does more than organise them. A grid full of reptile names primes you to look for endings you would otherwise miss, and a grid that mixes classes is noticeably harder for the same reason.

There is no timer and nothing to lose, which makes it a good fit for a child learning animal names and for an adult who wants something to occupy the hands. Completing a list unlocks the next category, and that is the whole structure.
