The tray in front of you has a fixed number of spaces, and plates of cake slices arrive to be placed on it. You do not merge anything by hand: identical slices that end up next to each other join on their own, and a completed cake vanishes to free the space it was using.

That turns the game into a placement problem. Every plate you set down is space you no longer have, and a slice with no partner nearby will sit there until one arrives. Filling the tray from one side and leaving the other open is the habit that keeps a run going.

Some plates come linked together and have to be placed as a pair. Those are the ones that end runs, because a linked pair needs two adjacent free spaces at the same time, and a tray that looked comfortable a moment ago can turn out to have no room for one.

Chain reactions are the reward for planning ahead. A cake completing frees a space that lets its neighbour complete, and a well-arranged tray can clear several at once. New desserts unlock as you go, so the shapes you are fitting together keep changing.
