Description

Math Stars is aimed squarely at children of six and seven, and its design shows it. Each planet holds five questions and then a boss, which is short enough to finish before a child gets restless and long enough to feel like something was completed.

The maths is addition first and subtraction later, and the progression between them is gentle rather than sudden. Answers are tapped on crystals rather than typed, so a child who cannot yet find numbers on a keyboard is not held back by the interface.

Bosses add the only time pressure in the game, and it is mild. Getting one wrong costs a life rather than the level, and the three-star rating rewards accuracy without punishing a slow start. That balance is the difference between a maths game a child returns to and one they avoid.

Four planets, cloud saves and eighteen languages make it usable as a small ongoing routine rather than a single sitting. It is a school-support game rather than an arcade one, and it is comfortable being that.
