Description

WorldGuessr drops you onto a road somewhere in the world with no label and no hint. Usually it is not a landmark or a city centre but a long, unremarkable stretch of tarmac, and the entire game is the work of turning that into a country.

You can move along the road, and moving is almost always worth it. A junction eventually produces a sign, a sign produces a language, and a language cuts the world down to a handful of candidates. Standing still and guessing from the first view is the fastest way to be badly wrong.

The clues are more varied than they first appear. Which side of the road traffic drives on, the shape of the utility poles, the plants at the roadside, the style of the houses and the colour of the road markings all narrow things down, and each one is knowledge you keep for the next round.

Getting the country right is a good result; getting the region right is a very good one. The gap between those two is where the game lives, and it is why people who play regularly end up knowing a surprising amount about places they have never been.
