Funny Shapes is built for children who are only beginning to recognise shapes. Each screen holds a set of empty frames and a handful of friendly-faced shapes, and the task is the single one of putting each shape into the frame that fits it.

Because there is no timer and no way to lose, a child can try as many times as they like without feeling punished. A shape placed wrongly is simply picked up again, which makes a mistake part of the learning rather than the end of the game.

The shapes are drawn with eyes and smiles, and that choice does real work. A triangle with a face is easier to remember than a plain one, and children usually start naming them out loud after a few sessions.

Since the whole game runs on a single tap or drag, a parent does not have to explain anything before a child starts. A session can be stopped at any point without losing progress that mattered.
