Puppy Merge changes the usual arrangement. Instead of aiming a drop and living with where it lands, the puppies fall into the arena by themselves and your job is to move them around once they are there. Two identical puppies dragged together become a bigger one.

Handling them directly makes the game physical rather than tactical. You are pulling a soft, heavy thing through a pile of other soft, heavy things, and moving one puppy shifts several others. A merge you set up carefully can be undone by the very drag that completes it.

The arena has open sides, and anything that goes over the edge is gone. That is the real pressure, because a crowded box is exactly when you most need to drag across it and exactly when dragging is most likely to push something out.

A puppy that falls out can sometimes be caught and brought back, which turns a mistake into a scramble rather than an ending. That small mercy is what keeps the game friendly, and it is why a run tends to end from a pile that grew too tall rather than from one bad move.
